The Arkhyz region has the wide variety of plant specious. There are above 140 types of trees and shrubby plants here. There is a unique area of fir forests in the head of Kizgych river. The Kizgych’s firs rise 60 meters and measure 1,5 m around. Some species attain the age of 700. This forest area is a part of those forestlands which were reigning at the North Caucasus in the past ages. Besides, there have survived some relict plants of Tertiary period such as: Caucasian pine-tree, fir, yew-tree, oriental plane tree (oriental beech), bean trefoil.

The upper frontier of the forest is limited by the scrub birches which alternate with rhododendrons and subalpine meadows. The area of Alpine meadows is situated higher reaching the perpetual snow line and glaciers. This mountain terrain is the home of the Caucasian deers, bisons, bears, goats, chamoises, wild boars, wolves, lynxes, foxes, wild cats, martens, and others. There are at least 150 types of birds. You can see the Caucasian blackcock, chukar, snowcock, and the largest wild fowl, such as: black vulture, griffon vulture, scavenger vulture and bearded vulture, which are of our main interest.
